What is a year?

We made a giant solar system model and we walked the orbits of planets to find out about their years. We went out to the playground and marked the Sun at the centre. We drew out the orbit of each planet in chalk. Then each child pretended to be a planet and walked slowly around their orbit. We discussed why it took each planet a different length of time to complete one orbit. We learnt that one orbit is the same as one year and when we went back into the classroom we researched the number of days in a year for each planet.
