Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
Newport school opened its doors this morning to the Fathers for the annual Fathers day brunch; the dads and grandads all settled down in the hall to enjoy their bacon roll and tea, before their children/grandchildren came to join them for a session of crafts!
The children loved having their dads in to colour, create, cut and stick to make paper crafts with them and many dads left sporting some stunning, brightly coloured ties - which I'm sure would go down a treat in their work places!
Thank you dads for coming and supporting the school - same time, next year?
Young Minds Matter!
Newport Primary School hosted an inspiring talk on Monday evening, organised by Mrs Pine which addressed some of the mental health challenges facing our young people today.
Steve Mallen, founder of the MindEd Trust, gave an informative and emotional talk to members of the local community, school groups and parents, drawing on his own deep personal experience following the tragic death of his son through mental illness.
Steve, who works closely with the government, not only talked about his own loss but also reflected on the current provision for diagnosis and support around mental health. It was reassuring to know that he is working tirelessly to reform legislation that will benefit our young people in years to come.
The event was well attended and it raised questions in a discussion which followed. As Mrs Pine started the evening by saying ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ so we all hope to build upon this to reduce the stigma around this important subject and help our youngsters thrive.
Newport welcomed an exciting opportunity today when ITV news came to report on the D-Day celebrations in school; as a result, we were featured on the Anglia local news at 6pm! The children...and staff, were very excited!
The day began with Mrs Pine's assembly all about D-Day and a local hero - Percy Turner; she told the children all about his life in Newport and how he was the cox on one of the first D-day landing crafts - amazing history!
Some of the staff embraced the opportunity to dress up and in classes, children continued their learning of the D-day events through: drama on the field (recreating the landings), diary entries as a soldier, discussions, emotive letter writing. Y3 and 4 also created a huge sombre collage of the vision of the Normandy beach, with the children making silhouette figures of soldiers, ships and aircraft.
ITV interviewed Mrs Pine, Miss Walbanke and many children from Y3,4 & 5 and filmed their learning in classes; everyone was so thrilled when they saw the finished ITV broadcast...putting Newport on the map and creating a buzz of 'celebrity status' among children in the school!
