  • BMX Champion leads the way

    Tue 16 Jul 2019
BMX champion Mike Mullen came to Newport to talk to the whole school about Growth mindset, his rise ( and falls!) to becoming British champion and to show us his skills. He led an assembly showing us pictures from his childhood, along with his stories of learning to not give up through, what he calls 'flearning'. He then taught Mr Murfitt one of his early skills on a BMX and he then treated the school to an amazing performance in the playground. The volunteering teachers were used as 'dummies' for his ramp jump....and we're pleased to say that he cleared them by miles! In the afternoon, Mike bought bikes with him and gave BMX workshop sessions to children in KS2, focusing on growth mindset and the power of yet. It was a truly remarkable day.
  • Cala Homes - Design a Garden winner!

    Wed 10 Jul 2019 Miss K Chandler
Another win from Newport...the whole of Y6 entered a competition to design a garden for the new Wicken Lea site; this involved planning it with dimensions, using budgeting systems when thinking about what to include in their space and using creativity to design a garden which would appeal to everyone. Cala homes chose the winning design as Arianna and Olivia's and I must say, their design was stunning! It featured a sunshade sail, a bridge, a water feature, wildlife planting and was well thought out and presented. Both girls won an Amazon voucher- but even better, their design was made into an actual garden down at the site...move over Monty Don! Olivia went to see their finished design, along with Mrs Pine and they had a photo opportunity with Cala homes and the landscape company. Look out for the press release this week.
  • A visit from Uttlesford recycling centre

    Wed 03 Jul 2019 Miss K Chandler

Rebecca from Uttlesford recycling centre paid Newport school a visit to teach them about where their rubbish goes, how it is recycled and she also gave the children an insight into what can and can't be recycled...we played a 'recycling the rubbish' game and were amazed at what couldn't be recycled!

I was particularly thrilled with how the children spoke about the recycling bins in school and how many of them had swapped from single use water bottles to reusable ones...go Newport!
