Robin class visited the local river for the afternoon with the local river group, who set up three activities for us to do. Firstly, we tested three samples of water from different locations along the river. We compared the levels of nitrates and phosphates with the recommended levels from the environmental agency. Then we had a look at the wildlife in the river by fly sorting into different types of water insects - we even got to see an American red crayfish. They are an invasive species and we couldn’t believe they were in our local rivers. Finally, we learnt about the local water cycle, including our local sewage works. We learnt about how we can improve the quality of our rivers from home; thinking about what we are putting down our sinks and toilets. It was an informative and hands on afternoon for all Robins!
