World Book Day 2023

Newport school had a fabulous day on Thursday celebrating ‘World Book Day’ and the theme this year was ‘bedtime reading in pyjamas’. The whole school dressed in their PJ’s and bought in their favourite books to share.

The day started with a whole school assembly, where we shared their books bought in and discussed favourite genres; we then watched Tom Fletcher read his story ‘There’s a monster in this book’ and joined in with him. They then watched Tom talking all about how he gets ideas and got some inspiration for how to create their own books.

The children enjoyed being introduced to Mrs Pine’s special books, wrapped up in brown paper and string; these have been set up to inspire children to selecting a book based on its blurb, and Leo in Y6 told the school these books were good for thinking ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’. Many children flocked to Mrs Pine’s room to have a read of those books.

The children were left with a challenge to work as a whole school, to find an author for every letter of the alphabet…and they completed it! Well done team Newport.

In classes, the children took part in many book activities during the day and had lots of fun; potato characters were created, stories about Supertato were written, bookmarks made and Y6 enjoyed recreating their own versions of ‘Tom Fletcher’s stories’. A whole school travelling story also visited every class throughout the day; starting in YR who wrote the opening,Y1 who set the scene, Y2 who set the characters, Y3 who wrote the build up, Y4 who wrote a problem, Y5 who wrote the resolution and finally, Y6, who wrote the ending. The story was read out in assembly on Friday and children loved to see how their ‘class part’ fitted in with the rest of the story.

The children left with book tokens in hand and were looking forward to spending them in store over the weekend.
