Welcome to Fox class. We are Year 4 and also known as the Fantastic Foxes.
Our class teachers are Mrs Waite (Mon - Wed) and Mrs Wicks (Thurs - Fri) and our teaching assistants are Mrs Staite and Miss Armorgie, who work with us, helping us to learn.
Our first trip for over a year was a very exciting prospect for Fox class. Having looked at Colchester – Local History as our topic Colchester was an ideal venue and the Castle Museum had lots to offer. We started our tour with a welcome by Shirley, our guide, and in groups had an hour and a half to explore the wonderful galleries set inside the castle, so history was all around us as well as inside the display cabinets. Although some of the interactive displays were restricted the children thoroughly enjoyed the simulated chariot racing. We took a trip to the castle gift shop before looking into the castle well and descending some very steep stone steps into the vaults. Here Shirley told us about the Romans and Celts who had inhabited the town and Leo and Morven dressed up as Roman solders demonstrating the tortoise manoeuvre; an effective Roman battle strategy. The children wanted to know what evidence there was that the town had been burnt to the ground by Boudicca and Shirley revealed that across the whole area archeologists have discovered a deep layer of ash which is unlikely to be just an odd fire as it is so extensive and we also know from Roman records about the uprising. Our final activity was the building of a Roman Villa, complete with a mosaic floor and an Iron Age Roundhouse – I have to say our Roman Villa building was more successful than our Roundhouse!
